501 Streetcar Toronto

The 501 Queen streetcar hosts a tweet and eat

It's not unusual to see people on the 501 Queen streetcar huddled over phones and tablets staring intently at their screens and tapping away while stealing quick and furtive glances. But it becomes a bit surreal when everyone around you is participating in a rolling interactive tour presented by Jonathan Goldsbie as part of the Free Fall '12 performance festival.

Billed as A tour of Queen Street, aboard a streetcar, conducted entirely via Twitter, the Saturday version saw a moderate sized group depart from the Neville Park loop at the eastern end of Queen just after 1PM and spend the next couple of hours in more or less complete silence in a strange combination of physical introversion while filling the Twitterverse with giddy observations about the passing scenery and their fellow passengers; many of whom were staring somewhat suspiciously at the weird people at the back of the car.

The most exciting part of the trip came close to the end shortly after Goldsbie tweeted FBI Pizza as if pointing out an interesting business name. Moments later he rushed to the front of the streetcar and jumped out the door and talked to somebody who had just driven up beside us at an intersection. Gasps and tweets of awe and admiration greeted his return with arms full of pizzas that he ordered from the suddenly popular pizza joint.

Here are some photos from the day:
