People are slamming the Toronto Marathon for being disorganized this year
The 46th annual Toronto Marathon finally took place on Sunday, and while some participants were ecstatic to finally see months of preparation pay off, others were dissatisfied with the event's level of organization.
Dozens of participants took to social media to air out their frustrations regarding the event, with most calling out the race's medal-retrieving process, inadequate water stations, and road safety.
The race stretches from Yonge and Sheppard to Exhibition Place each year and results in over 50 road closures from North York all the way through downtown Toronto.
"Toronto is a world class city and events like the Toronto Marathon draw tourists to visit the city. The level of disorganization by this event (I'm referring to the May 7, 2023 event not the Waterfront Marathon in the Fall) is beneath the standard for a city of our size," a recent Reddit thread reads.
toronto marathon you guys really need to reconsider the cars. A cop just told a group of runners to STOP in order to let a car go thru @torontomarathon @cityoftoronto pic.twitter.com/h6hWceULiC

"Participants this year saw events start late, cars trying to enter the course throughout the race, water stations being unable to keep up with runners and absolute confusion receiving medals and food at the finish line."
The Reddit thread picked up lots of similar reactions from runners and supporters who admitted that they also noticed the lack of organization during this year's event.
did everyone get one? They were dumped in boxes at the entrance of that building, no one knew where to go, no one was guiding people in, no one was handing them out. I almost left without one and was asking runners where they got theirs so I was sent to that spot.

"I was cheering near Wellington and Yonge and cops were letting cars through the intersection in very small gaps between runners, with some runners almost getting hit by cars. It was really scary," another person wrote.

"The post race was chaos. Bag retrieval was self-service without any security, there were multiple lines for food and drinks, again without any security, and people were grabbing goods by the boxes. Getting medals was a journey in itself," one response reads.
"I felt it was the most disorganized race I had ever been to. The water stations ran out of water and/or had people stopping and waiting to get a cup. The finish line was a confused mess. I had no idea where to get a medal or even a bottle of water," a participant said.
Was very disappointed in the last half of the race. Complete chaos on the bike path and at the finish. Actually slammed head on into another competitor going the other way at the mile 21 water stop. Then that finish line traffic, I have no words for. Almost cost me a BQ today.

"Can't believe no one has mentioned how chaotic the start was! Barely any bathrooms, the lineup was horrendous with tons of people cutting in and then the starting corrals were not properly separated so that people had no chance of getting into their proper position - which is supposed to lead to a less stressful start," one comment reads.
