Toronto chess club is popping up in the most unlikely of places
There's a new chess club popping up around Toronto, but it's not what you're expecting.
Knightcap is undoubtedly the city's coolest chess club – not only due to the a la mode crowd they seem to attract, but thanks to the singularity of its concept.
Beginners and champs alike can have the chance to meet and go head-to-head with fellow players in unique locations across the city, like Bar St. Lo, the Annex Hotel and even recently holding court at the Eaton Centre.
The concept first launched at the Annex Hotel Wine Bar in late 2023, creating a space where pre-established experts and curious beginners could come together and partake in some friendly competition, all the while having the option of picking up a cocktail or bite to keep the good vibes going.
Since then, the pop-up events have only grown in popularity and frequency, with events regularly taking place across a number of venues every couple of weeks.
An upcoming first for the chess club, they'll be hosting Chess Fest (in honour of International Chess Day,) on Saturday, July 20 at The Well, where anyone can play to their hearts content while nibbling on treats from Postman Waffles.
The event takes place between 12:30 and 4 p.m. in The Well's event court, and it's totally free and open to the public to join in on — according to Knightscap, it's the perfect event for "chess enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels."
