DeMar DeRozan says he wants to retire with the Toronto Raptors

It's been more than 6.5 years since DeMar DeRozan's last game with the Toronto Raptors, but it's pretty clear that the organization still holds the most special place in his heart.

On Tuesday, the Raptors put out a new episode of Open Gym featuring DeRozan and his longtime teammate and best friend Kyle Lowry, recapping their time together with the franchise.

The full video is available below, with the duo talking about retirement at the 23:19 mark.

Lowry had previously stated his desire to retire with Toronto on a one-day contract, a sentiment he shared once again in the latest episode.

And though DeRozan had always spoken highly of Toronto since his high-profile departure from the team, it seems like he's ready to make that commitment official whenever he does decide to call it quits from his NBA career.

"Definitely, that's the only place I want to go out as well, doing the whole one-day thing," DeRozan said. "It's one of those things, I think I said it before, like I would never have an emotional connection like I had with no other place than in Toronto."

The duo played together from 2012, when Lowry was traded to Toronto, until 2018, when DeRozan was shipped off to the San Antonio Spurs in a blockbuster trade centred around Kawhi Leonard. DeRozan also spent three seasons with the Chicago Bulls and signed with the Sacramento Kings this past summer.

"[I remember] the love, and the ups and downs, I really gave my all to that organization and to that country, because I just wanted [to be] respected in return," DeRozan added.

With Lowry being 38 years old and DeRozan being 35, the duo is definitely closer to the end of their NBA careers than the start.

But whenever they do call it quits, it seems like the Raptors organization is ready to honour them accordingly, with jersey retirements likely on the way for both players.

"They'll all come. They've got to stop playing first. Those guys, they're all legends here, they're all well appreciated in the city, in the country, in the organization… all those will come," Raptors president Masai Ujiri told us in September.
