Simu Liu and Kyle Lowry surprised crowd at Toronto movie theatre

The Toronto Raptors organization might not officially employ Kyle Lowry anymore, but he still seems pretty happy to support them whenever he can.

Coming to Toronto this week as a member of the visiting Philadelphia 76ers, the team's all-time assist leader made sure to show some love to the local fans.

On Tuesday night, Lowry crashed a screening of We the North: From Prehistoric to Historic taking place at the TIFF Lightbox. The 75-minute documentary, which premiered last month, showcases the 30-year history of the Toronto Raptors.

"Still feels like yesterday, winning the championship and being around the fans," Lowry told the crowd about the Raptors' historic NBA title in 2019.

Turning 39 later this month, Lowry is the fourth-oldest active player in the NBA. He's 41 days older than Toronto's current oldest player, Garrett Temple, and trailing only LeBron James, Chris Paul, and Taj Gibson as the NBA's senior statesmen.

One of the most beloved players in franchise history, Lowry spent nine seasons with the team before his departure to the Miami Heat in 2021.

But while he might've been the biggest NBA star in attendance, a Hollywood icon also showed up, with Canadian actor Simu Liu briefly taking the stage.

Raptors play-by-play announcer Matt Devlin joined the duo on stage, as did director Sami Khan and producer Vinay Virmani.

Liu, a huge Raptors fan and Toronto native, was one of the film's executive producers. Longtime friends with former Raptor Jeremy Lin — the two run an annual charity celebrity game in Toronto together — Liu was actually on the Raptors bus during their iconic 2019 championship parade.

After a short theatrical run in Cineplex theatres, the documentary will begin streaming in Canada on Crave as of March 13.
