New app lets you design your own subway system
Transit geeks won't be getting much work done over the next few days. New app Mini Metro, which allows users to build their own subway system is perhaps surprisingly addictive given its bare bones design and feature-set. Recently released in a trial (alpha) version, I get the sense that the game will particularly appeal to Toronto transit types, given this city's fascination with fantasy transit maps, DRL-dreaming, and lamentation over the ridership numbers on the Sheppard Subway (or, ahem, the 4 line).
You start with three unconnected stations and try to keep up with the demands of an ever growing city. If you can keep you're system running without suffering from station overcrowding, upgrades become available to you. Um, in case anybody thought transit design is a cinch, the first thing you should know is that this game is difficult. But, unlike, say, Toronto politicians, if you pay heed to your mistakes, it gets easier. Let's make sure every councillor and TTC board member plays this a few times.
