U.S.-based DoorDash opens huge new office in Toronto amid trade war

DoorDash has opened a large new dedicated office in Toronto.

The American food delivery company says the 2,389-square-metre space, which is located next to David Pecaut Square at 200 Wellington Street West, is three times the size of its previous office in the city.

The office sports a variety of rooms named after streets in Toronto, including Danforth, Kensington, and Ossington, as well as over 100 workstations and a game room.

With the opening of the new office, DoorDash is also hiring for over 20 positions, including roles in engineering, marketing, sales, and strategy and operations. All of this comes just under 10 years after the company first expanded into Canada.

Of course, the timing of the new office is rather unfortunate, coming amid rising calls to support Canadian businesses amid the trade war with the U.S. In Toronto, specifically, there's even been a push for an official "Buy Local, Buy Canadian" campaign. DoorDash is based in San Francisco.

It should be noted, however, that the leading Canadian food delivery service, the Winnipeg-based SkipTheDishes, isn't wholly Canadian, either. It's owned by Just Eat Takeaway, an Amsterdam-based food company.
