Bring on the fun! I realize there's been a fair bit of good, but dour, stuff listed lately, this week there are a more irreverent theatre picks available along with the more serious offerings. As always, if there is not a description with the show it has be described in a previous entry.

If you were chomping at the bit waiting for these listings yesterday, sorry about the delay, some extenuating circumstances led to me not being able to post yesterday. Luckily they are here now, so, without further ado, theatre listings for this week are after the jump.

Alumnae Theatre - Main Stage (70 Berkeley Street)
Daughter Of The House, April 18 - May 03
This is a premier of a show written by Alumnae Theatre member Lucy Brennan. The show tells the story of a woman "torn between her desire to follow her man to Canada and her duty, as the only daughter, to stay and care for her mother." This one is going to be a mix of funny and serious, I'm guessing that if I were to go see it I'd likely cry, but, you know, I'm a cryer.

Fairview Library Theatre (35 Fairview Mall Drive)
Alibi, (Fairview Library Theatre -35 Fairview Mall Drive) April 10 - April 19
I think it's fair to say this one won't be a laugh-a-minute, but it would likely be good pre-pint fodder to spark some heated discussions at the local watering hole. The show centres around two friends who conspire to kill a classmate and, of course, plan to hide it. But it becomes more difficult when three key folks come to visit them right after the discovery of the body: the victim's fiancee; their professor; and a mutual friend who, as luck would have it, is not only an ex-cop, but also a priest. Amicus Productions tell us that "Plot twists and debates about the ethics of capital punishment abound."

This is going to be featured in the Thursday Theatre Review this week by Graeme, but I have a sneak peek from him... "Funny stuff." Okay, you're right, he might be a *bit* more verbose in his review, but, you know, that's the gist.

Buddies in Bad Times Theatre (12 Alexander Street)
Happy: A Very Gay little Musical, April 16 - April 27
You know how I mentioned irreverent? Well, this would be one of them, this musical, written and directed by Sky Gilbert with music by Micah Barnes fits the bill. From the Buddies website - "exploring the very delicate balancing act that is modern gay domestic life. . . HAPPY: A VERY GAY LITTLE MUSICAL is a fierce and entertaining battle between irony and hypocrisy as it dissects the sometimes happy, sometimes rocky life of a gay couple that also happens to write songs together."

Harbourfront Centre (231 Queens Quay W.) - Enwave Theatre
Chapel/Chapter, April 16 - April 19
This show is a part of this year's World Stage festival at Harbourfront. Technically this would be a dance piece, but dance is certainly still theatre and this sounds very interesting. From the worldstage08 website - "In a setting reminiscent of a church sanctuary, three true-life stories are told in this intimate and hauntingly theatrical experience. Rigorous and joyful, tragic yet uplifting, Chapel/Chapter vividly contrasts evil deeds with beautiful, at times, elegiac movement and music in this riveting and emotional multi-media performance."

Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People - Mainstage (165 Front Street E)
Rough House, April 8 - April 20
The challenge with LKTYP shows is they are generally matinees, but this one has a performance this Saturday at 7pm. And this one fits into the category of plays that will make you laugh. From LKTPY website - "A dynamic combination of hilarious slapstick, clever dance and delightful shadow play, Rough House exemplifies physical theatre at its very best. . . . There is only one character, one act, and the story is told entirely through superlative movement and lighting technique."

Theatre Passe Muraille - Main Stage (16 Ryerson Avenue)
People Power, Carlos Bulosan Theatre, April 11 - May 11
From the (very annoying, newly designed,) TPM website - "People Power interweaves several inspirational stories of those who lived through the peaceful revolution that ended 15 years of Ferdinand Marcos' brutal and corrupt leadership of the Philippines in the 1970s and '80s. Created and performed by members of Carlos Bulosan Theatre's collective, People Power recounts the birth of a democracy through the rhythms and social realities of a newly politicized people: a revolutionary play with poetry, music and movement."
