5 Ontario road trips from Toronto you need to take in the early summer

Road trips from Toronto are the perfect way to escape the city's hustle and bustle, while exploring Ontario's natural beauty at your own leisure. Early summer is one of the best times to plan a getaway, before the peak of the season when places get too crowded.

From unique cities and small towns with their own charm and character, to breathtaking landscapes and outdoor wonders to explore, the province truly is yours to discover.

Here are some Ontario road trips from Toronto you need to take in the early summer.

Tobermory

Boasting Caribbean-blue waters, striking rocky shorelines, and vast dense forests, Tobermory is one of those destinations in Ontario that will take your breath away with its natural beauty. While the drive is nearly 4 hours long, it is a beautiful and scenic ride with rewarding views once you reach town.

Tobermory is an escape for nature-lovers, holding the title of the “fresh water scuba diving capital of the world” due to the many shipwrecks sunk in Fathom Five National Marine Park.

You can also hop on a ferry to Flowerpot Island, hike to the famous Bruce Peninsula Grotto, or stroll around the harbour and check out the quaint shops, cafes, and restaurants.

Thousand Islands

Located 3 hours east of Toronto, the Thousand Islands are made up by a whopping 1,864 islands on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border in the St. Lawrence River.

Known for stunning panoramic landscapes with sprawling forests and seemingly endless blue vistas, the islands are a popular draw for hikers, paddlers, and sightseers.

The summer outdoor activity hub was once an escape for the wealthy in the 19th century. You can take one of many cruises around the islands, hike stunning trails, or visit elaborate mansions on private islands, such as Boldt Castle and Singer Castle.

Stratford

Known as Canada's Arts Town, Stratford is located 2 hours west of Toronto and will transport you to another time with its Victorian-era buildings, museums, and galleries.

While world-class theatre is one of the city's main draws, Stratford also has incredible dining options and natural beauty to immerse yourself in.

With several food-based trails to follow, visitors can embark on The Bacon and Ale Trail or The Chocolate Trail. These self-guided tours include vouchers to sample some of Stratford's best local businesses, specializing in the delectable offerings of your choice.

Southampton

Less than a 3 hour drive northwest of Toronto, Southampton has striking tropical-looking (but not feeling) crystal blue waters, with a white sand beach and rolling dunes stretching as far as the eye can see.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Huron, the beach-side community thrives in the summer months, with a variety of great restaurants, cafes, and boutiques to peruse.

Stroll along the historic Southampton Board Walk with views of Chantry Island and the Imperial Lighthouse, or bask in the sun on Southampton's Main Beach.

Essex Country

Situated in southern Ontario, Essex County encompasses several municipalities including Windsor, Kingsville, and the southernmost point of the Canadian mainland at Point Pelee National Park.

The rural postcard-worthy towns are lovely to explore in the summer months, and you can go wine tasting at one of many wineries with lake views.

Outdoor enthusiasts would love Point Pelee National Park, a natural sanctuary extending 15 km into Lake Erie with an epic marsh boardwalk, bird watching, and beautiful forested trails.
