The Ausable Chasm just across the border in NY lets you float through an epic canyon
The Ausable Chasm, NY is one of the most magical places near Ontario and just a road trip away. Often called the 'Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks', the area features towering sandstone cliffs, a lush forest, waterfalls, and vast gorge with a rushing river flowing through it.
Located in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, the Ausable Chasm is roughly a 6.5 hour drive from Toronto, and 2 hours south of Montreal.
The chasm was carved out over thousands of years by the Ausable River, creating a dramatic gorge stretching over two miles long. It's been open to the public since 1870, making it one of the oldest natural attractions in North America.
The sandstone which forms the chasm is a staggering 500 million years old, reaching up to 45 metres (150 feet) in height, revealing stunning layers of ancient rock formations which speak to its history.
One of the most popular activities to experience is to float down a stretch of the Ausable River, known as the Grand Flume, either on a tube or with a guided raft.
This slow-moving part creates a natural lazy river, letting visitors thoroughly sit back and enjoy the surrounding beauty.
You can also hike over 8 km of scenic trails, leading you through the cliffs with epic views of the gorge below. Spot the wondrous Rainbow Falls, a stunning series of cascades which gets its name as it often creates rainbows in the mist around it.
While the park is open year-round, tours, including the float tour, only operate during the summer months and are set to re-open for this year on May 19, 2023. Depending the type of tour you are interested in, you can find rates on their website.
