Singer Castle on Dark Island makes for an enchanting weekend trip from Toronto
Singer Castle on Dark Island is a magnificent testament to a bygone era, where guests can even spend the night within its opulent walls for an incredibly memorable getaway.
Located in the picturesque Thousand Islands region of upstate New York, Singer Castle on Dark Island is surrounded by the sparkling waters of the St. Lawrence River, nestled amidst the archipelago consisting of 1,864 islands.
Originally known as "The Towers," the castle was constructed in the early 20th century by self-made millionaire Frederick Gilbert Bourne, president of the Singer Sewing Machine Company.
Inspired by his European travels, Bourne envisioned Singer Castle as a luxurious summer residence for himself and his family. The castle, with its medieval-inspired architecture, imposing granite turrets, and picturesque gardens, was completed in 1905 and has since become an iconic landmark in the region.
Surprisingly, Singer Castle isn't the only famous castle you can visit in the region; Boldt Castle on Heart Island also welcomes visitors to tour the six-story castle and grounds.
The Bourne family's lavish lifestyle is reflected throughout the property, and is truly something to behold. From the impressive four-story tower offering panoramic views to the grand dining room adorned with intricate woodwork and stained glass, each room exudes an air of timeless beauty and sophistication.
One of the highlights of the castle is the secret passageways, hidden rooms, and dungeons, adding an element of mystery and intrigue. The walnut-paneled library has a secret passageway straight out of a movie, which connects to other pathways inside the walls.
Within the Drawing Room, a portrait on one of the walls tips back, allowing the host to spy on their guests from a hidden hallway.
Visitors can come to Singer Castle for a daytrip and take a 45-minute guided tour of Singer Castle at $14.75 USD per adult. Alternatively, you can choose to spend the night and get a small taste of royalty.
The castle offers limited accommodations in its Royal Suite, which spans an entire wing of the castle and sleeps up to six guests. There are several well-appointed guest rooms, complete with antique furnishings, luxurious amenities, and unparalleled views of the river.
To get to Singer Castle, you can book a tour via Rockport Cruises, or take a private boat if its an option. As Singer Castle is located in the U.S., Canadian passengers must provide proper identification and show their passports for US Customs and Border Protection clearance.
