Wiarton is a small town in Ontario with hidden caves and a legendary groundhog

Wiarton, Ontario, might not always make the top of everyone's travel list, but for those in the know, it's a true gem waiting to be explored.

Located on the stunning Bruce Peninsula, just a few hours north of Toronto, this charming town is a perfect getaway for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone in need of a little escape from city life

Start with the iconic Greig's Caves, located just a short drive from Wiarton. These caves are a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The caves, carved over thousands of years by the natural forces of water, are perfect for exploration.

The area around the caves offers well-maintained trails, and a visit here gives you the chance to get up close to some breathtaking rock formations. If you're lucky, you might even spot some wildlife while you're wandering around, adding to the sense of adventure.

If you're looking for a bit of history, don't miss The Corran, ruins of a grand historic home that dates back to the 1800s. Once the residence of the prominent Colpoys family, The Corran is now a museum and cultural hub.

It's the perfect spot to learn a bit about the area's history while enjoying the beautiful views of Colpoy's Bay. The house itself is a lovely example of historical architecture, and the surrounding grounds are just as picturesque, with gardens, walking paths, and a spiral staircase that leads down to the water.

Of course, no trip to Wiarton would be complete without paying a visit to the town's most famous resident, Wiarton Willie - or at least his popular statue. This lovable groundhog (who's been reincarnated at least four times now) is a local legend, drawing thousands of visitors every February for the annual Groundhog Day celebrations.

People flock to the town in hopes of seeing Willie's shadow, which, according to local tradition, predicts the arrival of spring. Even if you're not visiting in February, Wiarton Willie is an important part of the town's charm, and you'll find his likeness around town, including at the Wiarton Willie Festival.
